Several researchers have identified misogynistic tendencies in the Christian tradition. Many Christian churches use predominantly male images of God, preach the doctrine of wifely submission, and exclude women from leadership roles. To understand how women find happiness and sustain their self-esteem within the context of Christian patriarchy, this paper presents a case study of women who attend a Bible class at a large fundamentalist Southern Baptist church in a Texas city. Using fieldwork and in-depth interviews, we examine the ways that women negotiate a religious tradition that promotes male domination. We find considerable disjuncture between their religious beliefs and reported practices. The women interviewed used a variety of strategies to subvert the doctrine of wifely submission. We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings, and identifying several promising directions for further investigation. This is a preview of subscription content, log in to check access.

Southern Baptists in Tennessee represent a tradition born in Amsterdam and London in the early seventeenth century, transported to the American colonies in the s, and carried south and west with frontier migrations. These Christians affirm the authority of Scripture, the liberty of conscience, autonomous churches composed of converts who have received immersion baptism, associational cooperation of churches, the priesthood of all believers, and religious liberty.
While there are numerous types of Baptists in Tennessee, the largest single group is represented in those churches related to the Southern Baptist Convention, numbering more than a million adherents statewide. Baptists were among the earliest settlers to Tennessee, with churches founded perhaps as early as , though records are unclear.
Certain of these Separate Baptists were forced to leave Carolina in the s after Governor William Tryon blamed them falsely for the ill-fated Regulator rebellion. A Southern Baptist pastor and former seminary professor asked a Christian publisher to remove a foreword written by Joshua Harris from future printings of a book published in , after the well-known advocate of the evangelical purity culture announced he has fallen away from the Christian faith. Harris , who authored I Kissed Dating Goodbye as a year-old in , announced recently on Instagram that he and his wife of 21 years were separated.
Last year Harris admitted he had misgivings about his earlier advice for unmarried Christians to forsake dating in order to avoid the temptation to engage in premarital sex. Views on race in the Nashville-based Southern Baptist Convention did not change overnight. The shocking May 25 death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police prompted many Americans to take a hard look at the country’s racist history and the systems still in place today that continue to disproportionately discriminate against people of color. It spurred nationwide protests and calls for change.

The culture war is over, and the gays and the liberals have won. Or at least this is what recent reports of changing attitudes toward gay marriage and sexuality in Southern Baptist communities have implied. Although this may be true at a few churches, at the national level, it doesn’t seem to be the case. Russell Moore, the president of the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, says media reports are overemphasizing a minority viewpoint. No matter what’s happening politically with same-sex marriage, he says, Baptist beliefs about homosexuality haven’t changed.
There is not space in Southern Baptist churches for someone who is unrepentantly engaged in homosexual conduct. Moore isn’t saying anything new; evangelical Christians have long used this language to describe their views on marriage and sexuality. It’s his job to articulate the public-policy views of the Southern Baptist Convention, and part of that is taking stock of where congregations stand. He qualified this in an interesting way: Testifying to belief, even fundamental views about sexuality and marriage, can be civil.
It’s tempting to look for cracks in the evangelical worldview in this acknowledgment.
