The U. Small Business Administration, better known as the SBA, announced Thursday that it is giving such meetings a nudge by hosting three business matchmaking events during National Small Business Week, which takes place June The goal, according to the SBA, is to allow small businesses to have face-to-face meetings with prime contractors and federal agencies to learn about contracting and subcontracting opportunities. Face-to-face meetings between small business owners, contractors, and federal agencies will last 15 minutes each, and the day will include speed-mentoring, panels on access to capital, government contracting, exporting, supply chain, and the use of social media in addition to the matchmaking event.
Last year, approximately businesses and 20 buyers were matched based on compatibility and the buying needs of federal agencies and corporations. Because of the ongoing coronavirus crisis and the State of Ohio response to it, the Ohio Business Matchmaker scheduled for April will be postponed. With the enhanced online capabilities, the program expands the procurement opportunities and contacts for small business. The online enhancement to the program was initiated at the Cincinnati Business Matchmaking Workshop Plus in April, and telephone interviews between Cincinnati small business participants of the program and procurement officials have already been scheduled.
As both a partner with the SBA on the program and an advocate for small business, HP procurement officials have dedicated hours and interviews with Cincinnati small businesses. Participants in the Detroit Business Matchmaking Workshop Plus, which was held last week and brought out a record small business owners, will also have the opportunity to virtually set appointments with major procurement officials. With 80 percent of federal contracts traditionally awarded to businesses within 50 miles of the Beltway in Washington, D.
Regional events are held throughout the country to ‘match’ up small businesses with federal, state, and local government agencies and Fortune companies for face-to-face meetings to discuss actual contract opportunities. Over the past year, the program’s growth has spurred enhancements to the program to include the addition of Business Matchmaking Workshops Plus, one-day seminars that arm small business entrepreneurs with the training and information necessary to ‘do business’ with the government and large companies.
Attendees are offered the chance to pitch their financing needs and receive guided feedback towards their endeavors.
